In the last ten years while my former film, television, and academic colleagues have been soaring to new heights in the areas of cultural, educational, and professional achievements, I have been writing a collection of dirty animal poems. (Perhaps a more genteel description would be a subtle, sophisticated, slightly sexy soupcon of saucy zoological satire.)

A few years ago I met a wonderful local artist who has illustrated the verses in the style of a children’s picture book. We call the venture “Animal Verses for Grownup Children” (rated PG-13).

About the Illustrator

Sabine Baeckmann-Elge – Background

Sabine was born in Berlin, Germany and immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of five, settling in New York State. She’s always loved to draw and over the years, developed an interest in the medical and scientific branch of illustration. So she decided to be traditionally trained in art, and majored in medical illustration, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Applied Arts from Pace University, and did her Masters studies in Art and Art Therapy at New York University.
Subsequently, Sabine worked as an illustrator and designer in the medical and pharmaceutical advertising fields for nearly 25 years. With the birth of the computer as a new tool for artists, she has bee fortunate to be a frontrunner in exploring and implementing this new technology in her work as well. Over the years, her work has been honored with awards, and has been shown in such prestigious places as the Hudson River Museum of Art, at the Briarcliff Gallery at Pace University, as well as at the Andre Shellingburger Gallery in California. In addition, many of her illustrations have been published in medical journals and other advertising vehicles such as ads, brochures, research papers, books and videos. In June of 2002, Sabine exhibited for the first time at the Pagosa Springs Arts Council Gallery, and then had a one-woman show in September 2003. Her work has been displayed at JJ’s Upstream Restaurant, JEM Jewelers, Wild Spirit Gallery, Shy Rabbit Gallery, and the Library in Pagosa Springs, as well as in the Pagosa Springs 2006 Calendar.
In November 2004, Sabine was chosen as on of 29 artists to decorate and/or adorn a bigger-than-life-size sculpture of a puma for the San Juan Mountains Association Pumas on Parade awareness event. In July 2005, the 29 painted puma sculptures were displayed in the San Juan Mountains region to commemoration their centennial celebration, as well as raise awareness for wildlife and forestry preservation. Her Puma later was purchased by a private collector out of New Mexico.
Subsequently, in early 2006, Sabine submitted three designs to the International Cowparade for their Denver 2006 selection. Her Alpine Explosion design was selected and sponsored, this time by the CowParade itself. This is the longest-running public international art event, raising awareness for the arts and funds for numerous non-profit organizations around the world..
In the past, Sabine served as Vice President of FoPA, Friends of Performing Arts, a non-profit organization strictly dedicated to raising funds to build a performing arts center in Pagosa. She performed in the Footlighters’ production “An Evening of Shorts – Revelations,” a production of short plays and monologues, and in "Boom, Bust and Battle," a musical & dance review of the 20s, 30s and 40s, both of which benefited the FoPA cause
Sabine is currently teaching painting and illustration privately.. She working on opening a gallery and giclee service in Pagosa Springs, and is also collaborating with author A.John Graves in illustrating a coffee table book of adult animal poems.
